SPY, SPX, and XSP℠ (Mini-SPX) options are among the most actively traded ways to gain exposure to the S&P 500®. Because SPY and XSP have the same notional size, they can seem somewhat interchangeable. But one critical difference can shape how a trade ends: settlement style.
Options settle either through physical delivery or cash settlement. Equity and ETF options, including SPY, are physically delivered, which means in-the-money contracts can leave a trader long or short shares at expiration. By contrast, index options such as SPX and Mini-SPX are cash settled, so the position is resolved in cash rather than stock.
For traders who focus on short-term moves and tightly managed entries and exits, that difference can be especially important around expiration—particularly when gap risk enters the picture.
A trader who holds one SPY 600 call through Friday’s expiration may end up with more than an options outcome. If SPY settles at $605.00, the contract expires in the money and becomes a long position of 100 SPY shares on Monday. That requires a capital outlay of $60,500 and leaves the trader exposed to any downside move in SPY once the new trading week begins.
By contrast, a trader holding one XSP 600 call with the same expiration would receive cash settlement if XSP closes at $605.00. In that case, the option settles at $5.00, with the payout determined by the difference between the settlement price and the strike price, multiplied by the index multiplier.
Since XSP is cash settled, no shares change hands and no stock position remains after expiration. The trade ends at settlement, with no added directional risk carrying into Monday.
Physical share delivery may also create tax consequences, depending on the trade and how it is settled. The potential tax treatment of index options compared with ETF options is discussed in the next section, including key differences traders may want to understand.
